Avipsya, student of National College in Dhumbarahi, chose Rikishi Compost as a company for her thesis project for waste management.
According to her, with only one landfill site catering to the waste of the entire Kathmandu valley, the waste management mechanism of the country is worrisome. As populations have been increasing, consumption has increased accordingly and waste is a natural phenomenon of it all. Waste management has been further complicated by ignorant household attitudes and weak institutional mechanisms for source segregation as well. However, waste is a resource if dealt with and managed properly and Rikishi Compost Pvt. Ltd. has been exemplifying that since its inception. The company has an excellent collaborative working modality of waste collection and management. In partnership with the local government, it has taken the initiative of collecting waste from households of Ward No. 4 and 5 of Bhaktapur. The organic waste collected is then processed into natural compost through an innovative process. This has been an exemplary model for waste management because it has been encouraging households to practice source segregation, diverting tons of valuable waste from emitting the landfill site, creating local employment opportunities as well as improving the agriculture sector through its natural products. Rikishi has well recognized the potential of waste and utilized it for the right purposes. With further sustainable initiatives like these, the waste management system of Nepal can definitely be improved.
